Radio 1 was founded in the spring of 1991, but the actual start of broadcasting came in the fall of 1990 during the exhibition Totalitarian Zone underground of the former Stalin monument in Prague’s Letná district. The broadcast of the then pirate radio station Stalin caused an extraordinary response, but was officially stopped after a few days. A petition for the resumption of broadcasting and against the monopoly of state radio and television was signed by 30,000 people. At the beginning of 1991, the equipment was returned and Radio 1 thus became the first Czech private independent radio station in this republic.
